Alex is a freelance conductor and choral specialist. He is currently Musical Director of Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society (LCCS), Cheltenham Choral Society, and The Cavatina Singers.
Alex studied on the MMus Choral Conducting course at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD), learning with Sarah Tenant Flowers, Adrian Partington and Neil Ferris. Alex began his conducting career as Director of Music at the Church of St Andrew and St Teilo, Cardiff, a position he held for eight years.
Conducting highlights include performances of Mendelssohn's Elijah, Mozart's Requiem, Bach's Christmas Oratorio Parts I-III, Handel's Coronation Anthems and choruses from Handel's Messiah Part I (all with orchestra). Alex is also committed to championing new music by living composers. He has premiered performances of Ian Lawson's One World CantataBen Heneghan's In carnatus est, the Welsh premiere of Mark David Boden's Dormi Jesu and is currently working towards a premiere of Heneghan's A spiral round the sun.
Over the past year, Alex has embraced weekly online rehearsals for all of his choirs. He directed a virtual performance for St David's Day with LCCS, and is currently working towards their virtual performance of Ian Lawson's Missa Brevis. He also directed a virtual concert for Christmas, which featured all three of his choirs and professional soloists, and solely comprised music from LCCS members Ben Heneghan and Ian Lawson, and Alex himself.
